Personalised Xmas e-cardsIt’s that time of year when we all think about Christmas cards and saying thank you to customers, colleagues and suppliers, but do you choose the traditional printed card or the ‘greener’ option of an e-card? Through an on-line survey the University of Salford wanted to find out whether the 164 year old tradition of sending Christmas cards printed on paper was now being challenged by the new Internet based electronic or e-card. To view the full survey see here > Traditional printed cards win over in this survey but there were some interesting comments: 66% of respondees expected to send and receive 21 or more traditional Christmas cards compared to less than 3% who expected to send and receive the same number of e-cards. It was felt that traditional cards demonstrate a commitment in terms of making the effort to choose and buy a card, to write them by hand and then to buy stamps and post them. In contrast an e-card was seen by many as being too easy, lacking in commitment, being the ‘cheap’ alternative and therefore of considerably less true value. e-cards as a form of business or work greetings were seen as more acceptable. The traditional card made from recycled paper or the recycling of Christmas cards was seen as a positive counterbalance to the e-card’s claim to being the greener alternative. However, e-cards were also seen as more fun and entertaining, easier to send and provided the ability to include photographs and other personal messages. The over riding message was that Christmas cards, printed or electronic are here to stay. They are still seen as an important way of showing commitment.
